Pioneer Europe NV today announces its new DVD-R/RW recorder, the Pioneer DVR-5100H-S, providing consumers with the next generation of DVD technology. Pioneer is set to revolutionise the home entertainment market by introducing its first DVD recorder with an integrated hard disk drive (HDD), capable of storing a massive 102 hours of broadcast programmes, films and digital camera footage. Now there is no need to stay at home to keep up-to-date with the latest football score or soap opera - every TV fan can leave the house safe in the knowledge that all their favourite programmes are being recorded to the highest quality.

Combining leading edge technology with a strong heritage of innovation and invention, Pioneer has developed the ideal companion for television recording. The built-in 80gb HDD provides consumers with unrivalled ease of use and new functionality, such as the One Touch Copy function that allows programmes stored on the HDD to be copied at high speed to a disc with just one press of a button. Users can also watch the beginning of a recorded programme whilst still recording the end - perfect for those who arrive home half way through their favourite show.

"Pioneer remains at the forefront of the home entertainment market through its development of easy-to-use products that take advantage of the very latest innovations in technology and meet European demand for recorders that make video recording a simple part of everyday life," says Philippe Coppens, Manager, Technology and Product Information Management, Pioneer Europe NV.

The slim and stylish Pioneer DVR-5100H-S can be integrated easily with any home cinema equipment, making it an integral part of consumer entertainment systems. Consumers are able to record a programme to the HDD whilst simultaneously watching a DVD, ensuring that they keep track of their favourite programmes without missing out on a movie night with friends.

Highest quality recording
Avoiding the clutter of videotapes, the DVR-5100H-S records on both DVD-R and DVD-RW media, as well as the built in HDD, making it a perfect choice for users who regularly record and overwrite TV programmes. Other key features include:

High capacity 80gb HDD that allows users to record directly on to the hard drive for temporary storage and archive selected recordings for permanent storage on DVD-R/RW discs
Using the Disc History function, users can easily find out which disc has sufficient space (or content that may be overwritten) without the need to actually load and check the discs in their libraries
Possibility of recording between one to six hours of material in both 'Video Mode' and 'Video Recording mode', depending on desired picture quality and editing capabilities
After a DVD-R/RW disc is finalised in Video Mode, the system creates a menu with selectable thumbnail images to visually confirm recorded programmes on a compatible DVD-Video playback system. The recording modes are based on MPEG compression technology for real-time recording of high quality images
Four pre-set recording modes ranging from low to the highest quality levels (EP, LP, SP or FINE), and in addition the option to manually fine-select the recording quality in 32 steps. Using the EP recording mode, users are able to record an amazing 102 hours of programmes on to the HDD alone
High speed copying directly from the HDD to DVD-R/RW discs to archive material without the need for decoding or re-encoding. This ensures that no image or audio data is lost, maintaining the exact quality level as recorded originally
The Disc Backup feature offers users a convenient way to backup important material on DVD to another recordable DVD disc. All contents and information from the original disc is fully backed up without any quality loss. During Disc Backup, recording to the HDD or playback of other content from the HDD is possible
A simple way to get more out of life
The Pioneer DVR-5100H-S guarantees ease of use and its straightforward recording functions means TV fans can relax and get out more without the hassle of programming the VCR. Key simplified features include:

Touch-n-Go functionality automatically scans recorded content on an inserted disc and commences recording at the first available space. This eliminates the possibility of accidental overwrites - no more sitting down to watch a favourite film only to find an hour of football instead!
Improved timer recording functionality enables users to programme fifteen minute slots using the on-screen cursor operated via the remote control
Simultaneous recording and playback means that material can be recorded on the HDD or DVD whilst at the same time watching another programme previously recorded on the HDD or DVD (performing both recording and playback simultaneously on DVD media requires using 2x speed DVD-RW media in Video Recording (VR) mode)
Chase Play functionality is a convenient feature enabling users to interrupt their viewing - to answer the door or break for tea - by simply recording the programme on the hard drive or a VR Mode DVD-RW disc and then watching where it was left off a few minutes later while the recorder continues to record
Easy recording from a variety of sources including analogue built-in TV tuner, digital camcorder and external AV sources
The latest advanced Graphical User Interface (GUI) enables users to record, edit and playback footage using thumbnail images as a guide. The copy list GUI makes it easy to duplicate edited or multiple titles at once, saving time and making content management easier than ever
Capture memories as well as movies
The Pioneer DVR-5100H-S is the perfect choice for editing home movies with a user-friendly DV in/output and advanced GUI. Key elements include:

DV in/output simplifies dubbing of digital video sources (for example, a DV camcorder), using i.LINK - incorporating recorder and camcorder control functions, making it ideal for the home movie maker
The advanced Disc Navigator (DiscNavi) interface with thumbnail images acts as a guide through all recording, editing and playback functionality
Expanded editing possibilities include non destructive and frame accurate editing in VR mode on DVD-RW media using PlayLists
All the features of a Pioneer DVD-Video player
It is a simple step to create a fully-fledged home cinema by connecting the DVD recorder to a Dolby Digital/DTS compatible amplifier/receiver and a multi-channel A/V surround speaker system. The listener is immersed in incredible surround sound and the special effects of the latest films. All DVD recorders play back CDs, CD-R and CD-RW discs and Video CDs. Additionally, the DVR-5100H-S can handle the latest formats like MP3 and WMA files recorded on CD-R/RW as well as the Super Video CD. There is also a JPEG PhotoViewer for enjoying digital camera images.

The Pioneer DVR-5100H-S will be available from November 2003.

About Pioneer and DVD
As a founding member of the Read Write Product Promotion Initiative (RWPPI) and an active member of the DVD Forum, Pioneer has always been in favour of the emergence of a single format for DVD recording. Pioneer is open to research compatibility with other formats, providing this creates benefits for users.
CDR-Info, Europe's leading on-line authority on optical storage technologies, carried out research in July 2003 that revealed that DVD-R is the most compatible DVD recording format on the market. CDR-Info used over a thousand combinations of media, DVD-ROM drives, writers, DVD players and recorders to conclude that content written to DVD-R was compatible with 96.1% of all playback devices used in the research, compared to 87.6% of +R discs.
